Consult Fiestas of
Fiesta is a celebration of popular joy, generally dedicated to a Saint person or a consecrated Virgin. People from many villages have the opportunity, during these celebrations, to meet new people assisting there every year, attracted by typical dances, night balls and good drinks.
The most popular fiesta in Segovia, Santa Águeda´ s Day, is hold during wintertime. Many women from the different Segovian quarters, especially from San Lorenzo Quarter, celebrate it. In Zamarramala, women, dressed in special customs, happen to “reach the power”. There are many typical activities such as a pelele burning, popular dances and chorizo aperitifs.
May and June are the time to celebrate Romerias (as an example, we can mention Virgen del Bustar in Carbonero, Virgen del Pinar in Cantalejo, Virgen de Rodelga in Mozoncillo, Virgen de Hornuez in Moral, Virgen de Salcedón in Lastras de Cuéllar, Padre Eterno in Estebanvela…).
The landscape is full of color and flowers, little rural chapels enhance ever more the countryside, so it is very easy to get relaxed and to enjoy the “paloteo” dances and the typical music.
At the end of June, during San Juan and San Pedro Days, we can enjoy fireworks, popular dances, actuations, bullfighting and “gigantes and cabezudos” parades, (typical and funny representations).
In August and September, very jubilant villagers celebrate a fiesta dedicated to their Patron Saint. First Sunday in August people feast Romeria del Puerto de Malangosto, honoring Spanish poet Arcipreste de Hita. There are some theatre representations and bullfighting, ball matches, popular aperitifs and dances during all the night long.
On August 25th, San Luis Day, there is a big communal meal (8000 people) in La Granja, based on beans from the zone.
Last Sunday in August, during Sepúlveda and Cuéllar feasts, it is possible to assist to the most ancient bullfights in Spain.
On September 7th, there is a typical parade in Santa María Real de Nieva, “La Fiesta de los Cirios”, as a tribute to Soterraña Virgin.
Then, on the third Saturday of this month, El Espinar village celebrates “La Fiesta del Teo”, dances and fire during all the night long. In the early hours of the morning there is a parade up to Cristo del Caloco Chapel.
On October 25th, the capital of the province, Segovia, celebrates its Saint Patron Day, San Frutos Day. People usually sing: “Viva San Frutos bendito, el de la bellida barba, anacoreta templado y ecologista de fama”. They cheer San Frutos, “a bearded man, who is described as a noted ecologist, animal lover and thoughtful anchorite”.
During the night of October 24th, at twelve o´ clock, in front of the cathedral door, there is a theatre representation that shows how the Saint passes a page in the Book of the Life. This “magic fact” is seen as a kind of a miracle by believer people. Then, below the town hall arches, there is a popular garlic soups tasting.
Next day, in the Cathedral, everybody in Segovia sings the famous “villancico”, a special song dedicated to San Frutos: “Al siervo bueno y fiel/que rogando sin cesar/ consigue bienes eternos de la infinita bondad”.
At the same time, Hoces del Duratón Priory celebrates a beautiful and amusing Romeria, involved by a marvelous landscape.
